The designer that founded designer j is Jennifer Harvie (nae Ker). A daughter of a seamstress she has always had a passion for textiles and a keen eye for colour even from a young age. She also has a natural talent for painting and after studying art and design throughout school decided to attend University. She studied Design at Duncan of Jordanstone School of Art and Design in Dundee and gained BDes Hons. Once graduated she tried machine embroidery after seeing it on "Kirsty Allsops-Handmade Christmas" and fell in love with the combination of fabric and illustration. From there she set up designer-j.

Jennifer sketches out the illustrations herself and applies them to the fabric. From there she machine embroiders round the images to produce a black outline on the fabric. She will then hand paint the images with insoluble paint so the cushions can be washed at a low heat.
